Vashlovani National Park, a jewel in Georgia's semi-desert landscape, is situated in the eastern region of Georgia, near the border with Azerbaijan. Vashlovani Protected Areas have diverse flora and fauna and include Pantishara Valley's rolling hills, Datvis Khevi's rugged canyons, Alesilebi's expansive cliffs and Artsivi Gorge's deep canyon. Vashlovani derives its name from an exceptionally scarce variety of wild pistachio tree (Pistacia atlantica). Due to the pistachio tree's resemblance to an apple tree, the park was name "Vashlovani" as "vashli" mean apple in Georgian.
Pantishara Valley is a picturesque expanse, characterized by rolling hills, lush greenery, and meandering streams, creating a serene ambiance that captivates visitors. From the viewpoint, one can behold panoramic view of the surrounding wilderness, with its distinctive pistachio tree groves stretching out in organized rows, reminiscent of an orchard. Rugged terrain and verdant vegetation paints a stunning tableau against the horizon, providing a tranquil retreat for nature enthusiasts and photographers. In Pantishara Gorge you could visit numerous nests crafted by swallows called "Mertskhlebis Kalaki" (the City of Swallows).
"Datvis Khevi" or Bear Canyon named after the formidable bears that once roamed its depths, offers a dramatic landscape characterized by steep cliffs, towering rock formations, and winding pathways. Carved over millennia by the forces of nature, the canyon showcases the raw power of erosion, with its intricate network of gorges and ravines. The canyon reveals ancient secrets like mollusks that are millions of years old and the fossilized remains of a prehistoric southern elephant. Visitors may encounter traces of bears, wolves, wild boars, and lynxes.
Cliffs of "Alesilebi" stand as majestic guardians of Vashlovani National Park. Rising boldly above the semi-desert landscape, these cliffs offer panoramic vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. A haven for birdwatchers, they provide a sanctuary for diverse avian species amidst their rugged beauty. Vashlovani National Park overall and expansive cliffs of Alesilebi specifically resemble badlands of the wild west. While driving near the cliffs of Alesilebi you could come across with Kurtsiki (Persian gazelle).
Artsivi Gorge with its deep, picturesque canyon is home to Georgia's exclusive endemic species, the Kakheti Machita (Campanula kachetica), alongside rare grass species like Globularia trichoscuntha and Galium pedemantanum. Just 1.5 kilometers to the west, nestled within oak-rich forests and atop the Webertela limestone massifs, thrives the uncommon evergreen shrub, thuya (Biota orientalis), a rarity in Georgia. Artsivi Canyon further stands out for its bird habitats, boasting around sixty bird species, including nesting rarities such as the Black Karkat and Orbi. It serves as an exceptional destination for bird enthusiasts.
